MVD Upgrade Will Better Serve Public

There have been times over the years when putting the word "efficient" in the
same sentence as the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division could lead a person to
sit back and listen to the laughter.

But that was then. MVD has entered the digital age and is offering important
services online. Called DRIVE MVD, the acronym stands for Delivering Results,
Innovation, Value and Efficiency.

Nobody will remember the mandatory marketing title, of course, but this
initiative has great potential. Need to renew your registration — even in Bernalillo
County, which requires an emissions certificate every other year? Drivers should
be able to log on, go to mvd.newmexico.gov, click on "renew a registration" and
be done almost before they've begun. Read More...

"DRIVE MVD" to put customers in driver's seat

Dec. 2--How about this for a dilemma: Sit at your home in comfortable pajamas while renewing your vehicle registration, or get out to your local Motor Vehicle Division office and wait in line for the next available clerk.

Secretary Rick Homans, of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, which oversees the MVD, was in Deming on Tuesday to unveil the "DRIVE MVD" initiative. The new initiatives are designed to improve customer service and improve efficiency by utilizing the website www.mvd.newmexico.gov. "DRIVE MVD is all about putting customers in the driver's seat so they have more options when they do business with MVD and it's our commitment to provide better customer service when they visit our field offices," he said in a release. MVD Web site to speed things up

LAS CRUCES - Tired of standing in line at the state Motor Vehicle Division office? State officials said Tuesday a new Web site, www.mvd.newmexico.gov, that went live this week will help to reduce wait times at local field offices.

Residents seeking to renew their vehicle registrations will now receive a slight discount if they conduct the transaction online, said Taxation and Revenue Department Secretary Rick Homans, during a visit to Las Cruces. Previously, because of an extra fee for vehicle registration renewals done via the Web, the cost wound up being higher than an in-person visit.

"People would go online and start renewing their registration, and they'd realize, 'I'm going to pay more to do this online than I would at the field office,' and just on principle, they got upset," Homans said at a news conference at City Hall. Read More... | Back to top

MVD puts focus on customer satisfaction

The state Motor Vehicle Division, perhaps the most-dreaded bureaucracy in state government, is making changes. Among new twists for motorists dealing with the agency are the ability to make an appointment with a clerk and an express lane for carrying out the most common transactions.

In addition, residents can use a new Web site to fill out and print some forms before visiting an MVD office, as well as renew registrations at a discount and check the wait time of a local office before leaving home. "Each one of these changes should have a tangible, real impact on the wait times and the level of a customer's satisfaction," Taxation and Revenue Department Secretary Rick Homans said.
